Evan Scheuermann

Mathematics student at St. John Fisher University, most recently a Data & AI Co-op at Rich Products Corporation building Databricks pipelines and LangGraph agent systems. I'm looking for data engineering, software engineering, analytics, or applied AI roles starting after I graduate in May 2027.

About

I'm a math major with an economics minor at St. John Fisher University. My coursework leans applied, covering machine learning, econometrics, dynamical systems, and statistical modeling, and I work mostly in Python, SQL, and R.

Outside of class I run a self-hosted Linux server and build web apps on Cloudflare. This year I'm also president of the St. John Fisher Math Club, relaunching it after it had gone inactive.

Experience

Data & AI Co-op

May – Aug 2026

Rich Products Corporation · Buffalo, NY (remote)

  • Built the development version of a Databricks ingestion pipeline slated for production, on a bronze/silver/gold medallion architecture. It uses Playwright to collect data from a ~7,000-record web source, with change detection so each daily run processes only the records that changed.
  • Researched fuzzy-matching improvements for entity resolution in a production master data management system spanning millions of records, and gave the lead data engineer specific recommendations.
  • Independently designed and built a proof-of-concept conversational agent in LangGraph on Azure Databricks, with per-message routing, vector search for context, and tool access to product data.
  • Co-built a proof-of-concept seven-agent LangGraph system that automates the IT project lifecycle with human-in-the-loop checkpoints, and presented it to the CIO and VPs at an IT leadership offsite.
  • Selected by my manager to lead a group of three Data & AI co-ops.

Customer Churn Prediction

Three-person project predicting which of 10,000 bank customers will churn. I led algorithm selection and built the random forest and the stacked ensemble. The ensemble had the best accuracy but caught only about half of churners, so we recommended the random forest with its decision threshold tuned by ROC analysis. Presented at the Fisher Showcase, 2026.

  • 84.3%sensitivity at tuned threshold
  • 0.868ROC-AUC

Ames Housing Price Prediction

Individual project comparing Elastic Net and random forest regression on the Ames housing dataset (about 2,930 homes, 82 variables). The random forest won, but only narrowly, which makes its much longer training time hard to justify. The models also ranked features very differently: Elastic Net spread weight across many, while the random forest leaned heavily on overall quality.

  • 88.5%random forest R²
  • 86.2%Elastic Net R²
  • ~15%typical price error

Steam Power & Manufacturing Productivity, 1850

Three-person project using log-linear regression with state and industry fixed effects on 124,860 firms from the 1850 Census of Manufactures. I designed the research question, built the regression models, and made the choropleth and industry charts. Steam-powered firms produced substantially more, with the largest effects in textiles, construction, and iron and steel. West Coast states stand out on the map, likely because of the Gold Rush.

  • 0.452steam coefficient (log output)
  • 0.516R²
  • 124,860firms

Crude Oil Lifespan Modeling

Three-person project I led, estimating how long Earth's crude oil supply will last. The model is built in stages: realistic reserves, fuel efficiency by vehicle class, logistic growth of the world vehicle fleet with EV adoption, and price elasticity. I built the modeling framework, wrote all of the R and Python code, and wrote the report.

  • ~140 yearscombined estimate from 2020
  • ~700 yearsif EV adoption comes 50 years sooner
